The Summer Honors Program (“SHP”) at Peking University School of Transnational Law (“STL”) is an opportunity for outstanding college students from China and around the world to spend a week in residence experiencing the academic and daily life in China’s most innovative law school setting. On July 30 through August 5, 2017, STL hosted 112 students from China’s most prestigious universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua, Fudan, Sun Yat-Sen and Wuhan, among others, as well as students from top international universities, such as Northwestern, Toronto and McGill.
Throughout the 7-day program, students were introduced to STL’s cutting edge English-language J.D. and China law J.M. curriculums. Students experienced actual law school classes taught by STL’s distinguished multinational faculty, participated in case briefing exercises and moot court arguments, and met with current STL students and alumni to discuss life at STL and the rewarding and diverse career opportunities that await STL graduates. Students also traveled to Hong Kong for two days, observing proceedings at the Hong Kong High Court and visiting the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. One of the highlights of the week was a visit to Huawei, which included a tour of their facilities and an explanation of emerging technologies. Students also heard from Huawei legal experts about data privacy issues and other transnational legal issues that confront multinational companies like Huawei.
“SHP was a very fulfilling experience. From the J.D. and J.M. classes to the moot court, I now have a better understanding of law and STL’s approach to legal studies,” remarked Liang Sisheng, an SHP student from Sun Yat-sen University.
Li Ziyu, a student from China Foreign Affairs University, shared the same impression: “The interactive J.D. and J.M. classes taught by top faculty have imparted the best civil law and American law education to me. The activities in SHP helped me to fall in love with STL, to learn commitment and calmness, and to look forward to my next encounter, if fortunate,” she said.
STL’s SHP program was established in 2009. Many current STL students and alumni participated in SHP before enrolling in STL.
