Choo Lye TAN

Partner, K&L Gates

Choo Lye Tan is a partner in the firm’s Hong Kong office. She practices in the areas of securities, corporate finance, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, funds, and public and private equity issues. Prior to joining the firm, she practiced in international law firms based in Malaysia and Hong Kong, advising her clients on general corporate issues in relation to the laws of Malaysia, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, and Hong Kong. As a result of her background in offshore and Asian laws, she frequently advises on cross-border transactions, including the strategic structuring and reorganisation of groups of companies to best benefit from local corporate legislation, particularly in the areas of asset protection, fund-raising, securities offerings, employment, prospectus registration, and tax. She has a particular interest in utilising corporate procedures such as takeover offers, capital reorganisations, anonymous associations, trusts, and schemes of arrangements to achieve clients’ aims, and has been involved in the structuring and establishment of funds using such procedures to invest in Japanese and Chinese assets. As a result of the strong investor base in Asia, she has also advised extensively on offers of securities in Asian jurisdictions on both a public and private basis and licensing and registration of securities, investment, and financial entities. Her mandates have involved investments in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Guyana, Australia, the Philippines, Mongolia, the United States, England, Italy, and New Zealand in such diverse businesses as timber, investment advisory and management, venture capital, microcredit, real estate, resort and property development, logistics, telecommunications, banking, finance and securities, oil palm, mining, hydropower and water and wastewater treatment, retail, and manufacturing. Choo Lye received her LLB from University College London.

Katherine FAN

Managing Director, Hughes-Castell (Hong Kong)

Katherine Fan is a Managing Director in Hughes-Castell’s Hong Kong office, and she focuses on recruitment at senior levels for international law firms, multinational corporations, financial institutions, and listed companies. Katherine first joined Hughes-Castell in 2010 and rejoined after working as Head of Legal Talent and Recruitment at US law firm Morrison & Foerster’s Asia (ex-Japan) offices and setting up the Greater China recruitment function for Baker McKenzie. A qualified career coach, Katherine is known for her innovative approach and strategic advice to candidates and clients. She was awarded In-house Recruitment Professional of the Year in 2017 and nominated as Recruitment Entrepreneur of the Year in 2019 by Human Resources Asia. A former litigator, Katherine graduated with an LLB/BA in International Studies from the University of Technology, Sydney and her LLM in Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of New South Wales.

Cindy KO

Registered Foreign Lawyer, Stephenson Harwood

Cindy Ko is a registered foreign lawyer in Stephenson Harwood’s Hong Kong office. Cindy practices in the areas of commercial shipping, offshore, and international trade disputes, handling a full range of dry shipping and wet shipping matters. She also deals with cross-border commodities trading and related financing disputes. Apart from shipping and international trade work, Cindy is closely involved with managing a broad range of Chinese-related investment disputes for both Chinese and foreign parties, including joint venture and shareholder disputes and hotel management disputes. Cindy has had experience in handling litigation and arbitrations across various jurisdictions, including Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Mauritius. Cindy was called to the Singapore Bar in 2014 and ranked Joint 10th out of 544 candidates in the Singapore Bar Examinations (2013). Prior to joining Stephenson Harwood, Cindy practised at the largest law firm in Singapore in the top-ranked shipping and international trade department. She received her LLB from the National University of Singapore.

Norman HO

Norman P. Ho’s research interests, broadly speaking, are in legal theory and legal history. More specifically, he writes in the areas of premodern Chinese legal history and legal theory, comparative jurisprudence, property theory, and Asian-American jurisprudence. Prior to joining STL, Professor Ho practiced law in the law firms of Slaughter and May and Morrison & Foerster LLP. Based in Hong Kong, his practice focused on a wide range of capital markets, private equity, and M&A transactions, as well as U.S. securities law compliance matters. He also previously taught as a lecturer in the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law and has served as a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Chinese Law (University of Hong Kong) and as an Asian Law Institute Visiting Fellow at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law.
