简介:

The ‘AFOLU sector’ (agriculture, forestry and land use) is responsible for approximately 23% of global GHG emissions that contribute to climate change, representing a bigger share than other important sectors of the economy such as transportation. Notably, these emissions are projected to increase, following the projected population growth until the end of this century. At the same time, agriculture is one of the sectors already more affected by changing climatic conditions, representing a significant challenge for sustainable development. Accordingly, the AFOLU sector has been included in international instruments and negotiations within the umbrella of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, as well as the NDCs submitted by parties of these agreements. On the other hand, the translation of these international targets to national policies and action is not without its challenges. This session will explore the interlinkages between agriculture and climate change, and provide an overview of how international and national laws play a role in addressing the challenges of promoting more ‘climate-smart’ agriculture practices.
